Antioxidant Properties

• Green tea and in particular the component, EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate), is a potent antioxidant and an efficient scavenger of free radicals. Free radicals are highly reactive compounds that are created in the body during normal metabolic functions or introduced from the environment (e.g. sun exposure, pollution, cigarette smoke, alcohol, unsaturated fat etc.). Free radicals react with certain chemicals in the body, and in the process, interfere with the cells’ ability to function normally. In fact, free radicals are believed to play a role in more than sixty different health conditions. Reducing exposure to free radicals and increasing your intake of antioxidant nutrients has the potential to reduce the risk of such free radical-related health problems.

Cardiovascular Health

• Many scientific studies have addressed the relationships between green tea consumption and cardiovascular health and have shown that green tea or green tea extracts, high in EGCG decrease risk factors for cardiovascular disease, namely trigylcerides and total cholesterol in the blood.
